Vaneza Ramos has won a $11.3 million verdict against Farmers New World Life Insurance after the company denied her claim following her husband Jose Gaytan's death from COVID-19 in May 2020. The insurer had rejected the $350,000 claim, alleging Gaytan failed to disclose a history of heart attack on his application, and instead offered $17,360. The Metropolitan Police is facing investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over its handling of a 2019 letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex. East Surrey shadow council has approved the relocation of Reigate Priory Junior School to new purpose-built facilities at Woodhatch Place, Cockshot Hill. The average 30-year US mortgage rate has fallen to 7.24%, down from 7.32% the previous week and the lowest level in more than a month. The 15-year rate also declined to 6.60% from 6.68%. A man in his 80s was seriously injured in a collision between a blue Skoda Octavia and a silver Renault van at the junction of School Road and Salt Way in Hanbury at around 1.48pm on 29 October. He was airlifted by the Midlands Air Ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The van driver, a man in his 20s, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. West Mercia Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Barbara Barrie, the Oscar- and Tony-nominated actress known for the 1979 film Breaking Away, has died at 95. She died Wednesday by medically assisted suicide in accordance with New York State's Medical Aid in Dying Law, according to her daughter Jane Harwick in a statement to The New York Times. Barrie had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Essex Police reported five men for alleged hare coursing in Dengie marshes on 28 October. Officers, the Dog Section and a National Police Air Service helicopter were deployed after reports at about 8am. The men, aged in their 20s and 30s, came from Basildon, Cambridgeshire, London and Northamptonshire. Four dogs and four vehicles believed linked to the offence were seized. Police are asking for help identifying a girl who may have information about an ongoing investigation in Burnley. Officers were called just after 11.15pm on October 27 following a report of concern for a girl in Yorkshire Street. The girl left the scene before officers arrived and has not yet been identified. Bromley Magistrates' Court issued a full closure order on 28 October against a property on St Fidelis Road in Erith, barring all entry including by 29-year-old resident Siantan Donnelly. Carl Osuwu-Boamah, 31, from Tottenham, has been jailed for three years for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. Mohamed Soliman is scheduled to change his not guilty plea to federal hate crime and other charges on Thursday for a firebombing attack on demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado, in June 2025. Soliman, already serving life in prison after pleading guilty to state charges, threw two Molotov cocktails at the demonstrators who were marching in support of hostages taken in the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, yelling 'Free Palestine'. Federal prosecutors say he attacked because the demonstrators were Jewish. The attack badly burned Karen Diamond, 82, who died three weeks later, and injured a dozen others.

No5 the Courtyard opens on October 31 in Norwich's historic Elm Hill, a well-preserved medieval street. Yorkshire Water has received the Environment Agency's lowest environmental performance rating, with one star out of four, after recording 13 serious pollution incidents in 2025. The company, one of four water firms given the lowest rating, was responsible for the second-highest number of serious pollution incidents nationally. Chief executive Nicola Shaw announced her resignation 24 hours after the rating was announced, stepping down after four-and-a-half years; she will be replaced by Nicola Medalova on 1 January 2027.

Two separate incidents disrupted traffic near Exeter on Thursday and Friday. Two lanes closed on the A30 eastbound at M5 Junction 29 following a two-vehicle collision, with the extent of injuries unknown. Separately, cows on the M5 between junctions 28 and 29 caused all traffic to be held in both directions; police safely removed the animals into a field and released traffic.
